Behavioural Experiment for Social Anxiety - Walking a Banana

I have long heard about behavioural experiment in the CBT. We used to have a guest lecturer in the uni who shared quite a lot different types of behavioural experiments she has done throughout her life as a therapist. One of them that I remember quite well was working with a woman with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), who was very obsessed with hand washing. And in short what they did, was putting their hands into the toilet bowl, reaching the water in it! then what? Without washing hands, they used their hands to eat!!!! It was like OMG, REALLY?! But yes that's what was done, the therapist was going it with the client, and really, nothing happened afterwards, and the client realized her obsession with hand washing really wasn't rational (of course this is kind of simplified, you should assume that they have done a lot of work in identifying irrational/negative thoughts, doing relaxation techniques and also discussing the rationale of designing such experiment etc).

Guess what I did today? Hehehe, oh the title tells - I walked a banana in Croydon, London. YES I BLOODY DID IT. Me and Krishna did it together, initially we didn't quite get into the state, and we were laughing and stuff. But after that we realized we really need to be so serious, so people know, yea we're serious about it. Believe it or not, so many people looked at us! (Well refer to the video below although it wasn't quite obvious in it). Some people asked Pei Man (she was following behind us and taking video). Some just stared, some tried to look covertly Haha. We went into the McDonalds, and obviously people were looking. I saw a guy taking pictures of us. I heard the staff saying "people coming with a banana on the string". At the end a guy approached us and asked whether he could take a picture, even asked for their names and age. LOL. The staff in McD also asked us. We left, another black woman on the street was like "what's this for?" Another two women walked past and we could overhear them saying "look at these stupid people". Hahahahaha. Stupid, I kind of enjoy this stupidity!! There were also quite ignorant people, who walked past like nothing happened. In front of the hotel, there were 4-5 teenagers, some just stared at us, while one who was obviously more extrovert approached us, and patted on Bobo (Krish's banana, and my banana is Nana), although another friend of his almost gave Bobo a big kick!

Okay up to this point you probably going to ask me, why were we doing this for? The idea came from Donald, our lecturer on the hypnotherapy course, who treats people with social anxiety. Oh yea this was one of this behavioural experiments with his clients. The idea is to do something and make people really look at you. In fact some people are often so self-conscious, being worried about what other people think about them, whether they look stupid, look anxious or too awkward etc etc. With experiment of this sort you probably find out the reaction could be quite different from what you think. But even if it was what you think (that "you look stupid", "you look so anxious", "you look like an idiot"). Those are just their thoughts! So what?? It's nothing catastrophic. Let them think what they want.

It's like people who are overly anxious doing public speaking, worrying they might make mistake. Well okay there are a lot of thing you could do to present your best, but what if you make mistakes? What if... you make a mistake deliberately?? Laugh it off? Chances are you are going to survive it anyway, why worry? This is my way of seeing it, though Don said people can test by making a mistake deliberately and see what happens, see what's so catastrophic about it. Of course this doesn't mean that I'm no longer anxious, and no longer worried in public speaking, but when you really analyze your reason of being nervous, rather than focusing on hiding your nerve/anxiety, the results are most likely going to turn up better.

I also forget to mention, at this very same day when Don realized we're going to do his banana walking experiment, he was also interested in joining. So I gave him a string and he got himself an apple to walk, but that apple fell off. And what did he do?! - he went to a toy shop, got himself a pink piggy soft toy, which could fart if you sat on it - and he MADE the shop assistant showed him how the pig fart in front of a long queue / big crowd of shoppers. Then he put the string on the big pink pig and walked it back....... You probably going to say he's such a weirdo. Hahaha well he is... not. I suppose it can get addictive, so additive. But to go to shop and ask for certain things to be done, is part of assertiveness training (and other things). And doing all those things can get quite addictive! Well, in fact at the same time you're also helping your clients and being a problem-solver.

I just have got to say, I have really enjoyed it. And Krish did too - know what? She's a mum of two, and she was as passionate as me if not more, in stuff like this. Hahahaha.

P.S. I just think it's important to give credit to Donald Robertson, given how much of his ideas I quoted here (you can google about him if you're interested).

What you need to know to travel to Barcelona

The Barcelona Card is worth getting. It saved us a hell lot of money on travelling (especially on Metro). And of course, some entrance fees too, though most are just 2-3 euros discount.

When entering the ticket into the machine at the Metro station, sometimes it's on your left, other time on your right. Weird!

Check their sales period before going! They don't have boxing day in December like most other countries. :(

The weather in December is not as warm as you imagine. The temperature up the hill is not as cold as you think.

In general they have all their meals 1-2 hours later than us. You might think this doesn't matter, but we went to a restaurant at 12pm and they were trying to serve us breakfast..

The Txapela restaurant is the only restaurant that I'd like to recommend. It's very close to one of the Zaras in the town. Though, I suppose people go there to eat "for fun" rather than treating it as a proper meal, otherwise you'd end up having a bill like ours.

Zara is not really "everywhere" like the guide book says. Though the price is also not as low as what most people say (well, at least compared to those in the UK, blame the pounds sterling!).

The only name I came to know after my trip is Antoni Gaudi. And Barcelona is the city of Gaudi. He honestly did very brilliant art work in this city. He's Gaudi!

Bring someone who reads maps brilliantly, if you can't do it yourself. We spent most of the time walking the complete opposite direction while we're looking for places!

Don't sleep with someone who likes to put his/her arm on his/her head. The elbow will be waking you up all night. (note: I wasn't the victim).

Overall it's a beautiful city (thanks to Gaudi). Most of the entrance fees are a bit costly. The food in general is good, and is usually reflected through the price. It's many people's favourite European city, though not mine!

Note: Can't find a proper picture of us 4..

Wow

A kind of funny thought came out to my mind today when I was having the monthly staff meeting on the ward... Phil (the ward manager) wanted us to say something positive about the ward if the dice turns out 3-6 and negative if 1-2. He passed it to me, I rolled it and it showed 4, I then thought for 2-3 seconds then said something that I really like about this ward.

Then the dice was passed on. I was then thinking, I was doing all these so naturally, I was the first one to start with, I was speaking English in front of all these people whose mother tongue is English, but my heart didn't even beat a little faster.

You might not realize what I want to say yet, because even myself have not realized what I have become until today. I went to Chinese kindergarden, Chinese primary school, Chinese secondary (high) school. I'd never liked English class (apart from Junior 2, Ms Mariam who was an excellant teacher). I was consistently one of the highest scorers in most if not all subjects, and it was always English the exemption. I disliked it, I wasn't interested to learn it, I found it so difficult.

But today, it all happened so naturally. Wow. I'm impressed.

P.S. I've been put down to go to Thorpe Park (for work)!! Really excited!

Compliments to TGV, Bukit Tinggi

Went to watch a movie Kung Fu Panda 2 in TGV, Bukit Tinggi today with a friend. Although the movie is good and I'll recommend it to most people, I'm not writing about it today...

We bought the tickets from the counter at around noon, and there were tickets ready by the machine after we stated what we wanted to watch, which was quite strange, but the cashier double checked and made sure the tickets matched what we wanted exactly (apart from the seats, which were even better). When time approached we went in for the movie, there was a man standing just by the row N (our seats were N9 and N10), and asked to see my tickets, I showed him and he led us out, explained to us that there was system errors- those two seats had been booked online by somebody else, and were taken. I was sort of disappointed and thinking what he could offer us. He then said that he could refund us, then also showed two cards (which was called something like compensation card(?)). My friend asked if there was any seat left in the same screen and he said no but he could offer us couple seat (which was slightly more expensive?) for the next time slot (screending an hour and 50 minutes later). We were cool with the later time since my friend had to wait for her sister anyway. Then he said he could refund us. By then we realized, we were going to get the refund, and still watching a later show (which we're happy with) with better seats [free of charge].

Wow, I didn't know such good service exists in Malaysia nowadays (lol). And this man is polite and very apologetic (well, sure ma, it's their fault!). I'd probably be quite happy if I get a refund and some very good attitudes, but now I get refund, good attitudes, and free good movie, so I'm very happy, and decided to write a compliment on my blog (oh am I too easily pleased?). Hahaha. Well done!

The other thing is he gave us back the torn tickets and just changed the details by hand, so I was like "how if they said we changed it ourselves" and wanted his name, he said they couldn't print a new one, then put his signature on the tickets and said the staff would recognize it was his. I should have got his name [just in case], but now I think if I had then he would get the compliment together. (Eventually we got in without any problem)

P.S. I also feel very paiseh when he explained [a lot] in Malay and I only heard the word "sistem", and asked to repeat in English after he finished. lol

Zany Bridge

In the year of 2007, Kian, Limpeh, Joyce, Michelle, Bpeng and me went to a 12 day Europe trip together. During that period, the 4 of them have been really into a game - Bridge. And they have taught us some basics of it. I need to say that I had not really mastered the game during that short period, and didn't understand why they were so into it.

Then during the final exam period of 2008, Peiman introduced us an online gaming site -Viwawa. I saw my previous blog that we were like playing mahjung etc nearly every night.. HAHA (exam period ma..). After that, I couldn't remember when, but I noticed the Zany Bridge in the list of games and started trying it myself. Then I started on off playing it and until this year become really addicted to it during assignments/dissertation peak period..

Actually I've always wanted to blog about this, especially in writing guide so that I could have real life friends to play with me... (I miss playing with real cards as well =/) As I would say, none of the games in vww is (that) addicting, its only zany, an intellectual game that I would say you could hardly master it, and that you would always find ways to improve yourself, and enjoy differently when you play with different "level" players. The thing is the game is kind of complicated, if we were to put everything in words (and it's not the one you could search on Wikipedia), yet I think viwawa forum can provide you some basics.

Why am I talking about all these suddenly? Coz I was clearing my laptop earlier and I found some screen shots.. I learnt this from another player rainb0w81, that she always print screen whenever some special or weird stuff, bugs take place.. And I found these which are what we would call "sure win" in min 4 games (minimum bid of 4) that we play. (I dont really know the purpose of printing these screens, so i guess the only thing I could do is to put it in my blog, although I clearly doubt how many readers can understand what those hands mean >"<)

This is what we call 2-suit (also could have bidded 5nt).
For me, it's a hand that's impossible to lose,
yet my partner (tas) has got the ability to make this sure win game.. lose = =
as that was just he and me who had hearts, and he kept throwing hearts, so the opponents kept trump and ended up wasted all my heart set.

This is also 2-suit. but rely less on the 2nd (non-trump) suit..

could hardly lose..

I wonder how awful the other's hands are.. xD

These 3 hands, are the sure-win hand for 5NT (including a set winning by partner)

O.O

10 Trumps!! (if playing got trumps la, but I bidded 5NT- i.e. No Trump), called Ace dia, which was rain, and we got all 13 sets.
There is a player who played more than 30k games, and he said he has got 10 trumps only for once!!
But so far I've got twice already.
p.s. these players (rainb0w81, csyuan, ariel_23) are awesome.. are also those that I spent most of my time to play with.. as I seldom play with random people anymore.. and another one is Sissywawa.

Obviously very crazy and imbalanced hand.. =D
me and Lilbarbie got 13 sets too..

So... can anyone understand what I'm talking about? xD
Anyway, all those hands that were shown are just the best part of loads game played (i.e. you would hardly see cards as good as those), and luck is just a very small part of zany bridge, especially when you play a lot, what matters is always skills.
And finally... let me know if you want to learn.. if I can't teach, I can probably find you a good tutor.. =D

Paris Disneyland

Some random pictures...

Disneyland Paris.. my 2nd visit!

Both of them took picture with me.. together!!
Remember last time in Hong Kong Disneyland, I queued so long and could only take pic with Daisy..

Hahaha.. I like this!!

Gogo and ahjeh refused to take picture with it because..
They don't even know who that is..
and they kept laughing when I told them "Ratatouile" (as if I made it up)!

Spot pama in there..
I actually laughed out loud when I saw this..
It seems that they have had enough traffic jam in m'sia!
Why came to Disneyland also got traffic jam la? hahahaa..

I think if I have got time I'm going to gather all my pics with the disney characters..
coz last time when I came to Paris one, I took with quite a lot not so well known characters also..
and it seems that no matter how many times I went, I could still be very hyper when I was there.. hahaha

Facebook & Lower Grades

College students who use Facebook spend less time studying and have lower grade point averages than students who have not signed up for the social networking website, according to a pilot study at one university.

However, more than three-quarters of Facebook users claimed that their use of the social networking site didn’t interfere with their studies.

We can’t say that use of Facebook leads to lower grades and less studying – but we did find a relationship there,” said Aryn Karpinski, co-author of the study and a doctoral student in education at Ohio State University.

“There’s a disconnect between students’ claim that Facebook use doesn’t impact their studies, and our finding showing they had lower grades and spent less time studying.”

While this was a relatively small, exploratory study, it is one of the first to find a relationship between college students’ use of Facebook and their academic achievement.

Typically, Facebook users in the study had GPAs between 3.0 and 3.5, while non-users had GPAs between 3.5 and 4.0.

In addition, users said they averaged one to five hours a week studying, while non-users studied 11 to 15 hours per week.

"There may be other factors involved, such as personality traits, that link Facebook use and lower grades,” she said. “It may be that if it wasn’t for Facebook, some students would still find other ways to avoid studying, and would still get lower grades. But perhaps the lower GPAs could actually be because students are spending too much time socializing online."

What do you think?

I found myself spend relatively less time on Facebook nowadays due to its new layout (especially not happy with the fixed selections of published news, get annoyed that people keep doing tests and publishing them). But I used to spend lots time playing some games (some applications like "Who has the biggest brain?" "GeoChallenge" or "Friendsforsale" that sort of thing) or commenting on photos. Hmmm.. I do agree that it could be a distraction, but would it be affecting people's grades in college?

Anyway, it's important to note that they merely found a relationship, especially there could be many confounding factors underlie the relationship, such as personality traits as mentioned. There are also people who found facebook improved their grade as it helped them to make course related contacts. So perhaps it just depends.. And if we were to compare, I guess the advantages may outrange the disadvantages..

Students ma, even if there is no such thing as facebook on earth, there will always be something else to distract US from study.. LOL (such as blogging? why dont they investigate the relationship between regular blogging and college grade? ahahah..)

Swollen finger due to 'excessive' writing

I wonder whether anyone is like me - normally when I write loads word the middle finger of my right hand will get swollen, it hurts a bit when it just appears, and takes quite long time to disappear.
I know the problem is actually because I hold pen too tightly and write too hard - the whole table normally waggle until those that sit beside me usually split their table from mine during high school.. hahahah..

That's why normally I try to get this kind of pen

You may realize or not, there is a little rubber thing to let you hold, although it doesnt help too much, but at least it does.. slightly
Obviously I've nearly finished the ink. =/
and this is my new pen... just 3 hours of note writing my middle finger bengkak :(

What to do?

This is the pencil that has followed me for.. about 5 or 6 years

Guess what I've done to solve my problem - Look carefully,

Hahahaha.. Wuliao, I know
but trust me and try it, it helps!! (:
(Note on 01.03.2012: I don't know why the pictures wouldn't show anymore, but basically I moved the rubber from a mechanised pencil to a ball pen so that it's softer for the middle finger, and it really helps!)

Anyway, I believe nowadays not many have the chance to write excessively..

You must be Jo King!

Just saw the BBC News regarding the most unfortunate names. It did make me laugh out loud. Have a look - click here : )

Retired airman Stan Still, 76, from Cirencester, Gloucestershire, said his name had been "a blooming millstone around my neck my entire life".

"When I was in the RAF my commanding officer used to shout, 'Stan Still, get a move on' and roll about laughing," he said.

"It got hugely boring after a while."

Susan Mee, Doncaster
"My name was Susan Frame. I am a lawyer. I met and married Robert who is a banker. His surname is Mee. Now we are Sue Mee, a lawyer, and Rob Mee, a banker - ironic? I have taken no end of stick for this, believe me."

This one is so hilarious!! A family name - Mee.. Imagine a lawyer saying her name is "Sue Me" and a banker "Rob Me"... XDD

How about Curry Mee, Pan Mee, Indo Mee..

OK. I do agree that it's kind of rude to laugh at other's name.. no offence taken please.. well, me myself also have a surname that can make jokes of...

WTH.. PMS Buddy?

Guess what I've found:

PMS Buddy Saving relationships, one time at a month!

And they even have it on facebook.. PMS Buddy on Facebook -_-"
Does that mean that when your auntie's visiting they'll give you (or your bf, or whoever use it) a notification? If so, the whole friends network is going to know when your auntie's visiting lor? - then they can write on your wall sending regards etc etc.. OK, perhaps I think too much, perhaps it doesnt work at all.. :D

Isn't that ridiculous? I mean, is it that serious? I know la, perhaps those stuff are set up for some kind of "Just For Fun" purposes, but I do think people may take it quite seriously..

And, ya lar, recent years I started to feel that they do affect my mood, I can get moody and very low without very apparent reasons, and I'm glad there's something to blame, i.e. the hormone. But I guess it's not everyone who get affected (right?). at least previously I wasn't and sometimes I'm not. Whereas for many people, they are like in PMS all the time - very irritable and impetuous all the time.. this includes some guys..

This reminds me our geography teacher (Ms. 翁明娇) during high school.. ahahahaha.. She used to be a good teacher and she teached really well I'd say, but the latter few years she became really impatient and @#$%^&*... Then a few guys in our class "spotted" her PMS quite accurately.. ahahahaha.. good old memory.

Anyway, perhaps somebody try the site or application, then tell us whether it's useful la k? :D

moobs - man boobs

The number of men having breast reduction operations in the UK is rising dramatically, but is this really the result of the media spotlighting the physical flaws of male celebrities?

see this: Why are we suddenly obsessed with 'man boobs'?

There are more geli pictures.. but I don't want to pollute my blog..
it's for semua lapisan masyarakat.. XD
we just discussed about this that day.
Sammi said her boyfriend is gainning weight.. and she told him,
probably soon or later his moobs will be bigger than hers.. LOL

Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

Aristotle (亚里斯多德): To actualize its potential.

Buddha: If you ask this question, you deny your own chicken-nature.

George W. Bush: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either with us or it is against us. There is no middle ground here.

Bill Clinton: I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What do you mean by chicken? Could you define chicken, please?

Darwin: Chickens, over great periods of time, have been naturally selected in such a way that they are now genetically dispositioned to cross roads. (Yea.. he's right!!)

Einstein: Whether the chicken crossed the road or the road moved beneath the chicken depends upon your frame of reference. (Hahaha.. I like this one)

Freud: The fact that you are at all concerned that the chicken crossed the road reveals your underlying sexual insecurity. (LOL... Freudian..)

Bill Gates: I have just released the new Chicken Office 2000, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook. (this is rather silly)

Saddam Hussein: This was an unprovoked act of rebellion and we were quite justified in dropping 50 tons of nerve gas on it.

Carl Jung: The confluence of events in the cultural gestalt necessitated that individual chickens cross roads at this historical juncture, and therefore synchronicitously brought such occurrences into being.

Martin Luther King, Jr.: I envision a world where all chickens will be free to cross roads without having their motives called into question. (I like this..!!!)

B.F. Skinner: Because the external influences which had pervaded its sensorium from birth had caused it to develop in such a fashion that it would tend to cross roads, even while believing these actions to be of its own free will. (Behaviourism.. Hmm.. i dont like : P)

Wittgenstein: The possibility of "crossing" was encoded into the objects "chicken" and "road", and circumstances came into being which caused the actualization of this potential occurrence.

Molly Yard: It was a hen! (a feminist..)

Voltaire: I may not agree with what the chicken did, but I will defend to the death its right to do it.

MORE:
Why did the turkey cross the road?
Because it was the chicken's day off

Why did the dinosaur cross the road?
Because chickens weren't invented yet

Why did the duck cross the road?
To prove he's no chicken

Why DIDN'T the skeleton cross the road?
Because he had no guts (LMAO.. true!!)
Because he had no body to cross with him

Why did the chewing gum cross the road?
Because it was stuck to the chicken's feet
(I love this one!!! simple, logical yet ... hilarious!!!)

Well, I hope this does destress or entertain at least some of you.. especially those who never come to this "why did the chicken cross the road" joke riddles : D

Gmail Themes

Google mail has just had their themes launched!
In the beginning I wasn't very keen on it
because I love old things, I like things that I am used to
and don't like changes as it takes time to get used to them
so after testing on a few blue and the contrast black themes
I still found the classic one suits me best
but later my 2nd bro said he likes the new themes and asked whether we try
so this morning while having a bit slacking time
I tried a few of them... and guess what
(haiya, when you see the post you should have known I found something worth mentioning)
the Ninja theme is damnnnn funny and cute la!
have a look:

top of Gmail.. it looks a bit complicated
and even the original old Google logo isn't there.. =/
makes me feel like it's pirated

while checking mails... this is what at the bottom

ohhh fight!!

damn useless ninja.. XD

hahahaha.. cute couple

hmmm.. so fat geh?

see what happened??
it surprised me because it changes over time!!
this is why I had to set my location when I chose this theme..
(I'm not going to show all I've found, otherwise there will be no surprise for you : )
I wonder whether they all can be connected and become a story..?)

cute right? it makes checking mails not that boring
although I'm not very happy with all the red colour links in my mails!
but there are still many options to suit different kinds of people-

I'm not sure what others think about it
but being a great supporter of Google,
i always have the impression that Google normally makes things simple yet practical
and this new theme thingy slightly changed my impression
I hope this could apply to my Google calendar as well..
it looks relatively boring now.. haha..
but I hope things won't get too far too much
just keep them uncomplicated and practical

why being busy?

my Google mailbox will tell you what people around me have been busy with recently...

hahahaha...
i know this is damn lebihhh.. XD
but its really ... too much!
and it happens everytime after our gatherings
luckily gmail has already clustered those from the same author -_-"
(the notifications could be disabled here if you feel really annoyed.. )

Vietnam To Ban Small Chested Riders From Motorcycle Riding

Strange but true. The Government from Vietnam are planning to ban small chested people from riding motorcycles! If your chest measures less than 28 inches (72 centimeters) you will not be allowed to ride a motorcycle.

The idea comes their Ministry of Health. They want only people who are in good health to ride motorcycles, and, according to the politicians, if you have a small chest, you are not healthy.

The same proposed law also forbids people from riding a motorcycle if they suffer from enlarged livers or sinusitis. Mind you, this applies only to riding motorcycles! If you are a small chested woman, suffering from an enlarged liver and have a sinusitis problem, you are allowed to drive an enormous truck. No problem....

I see an enormous market for breast implants, male and female, or is this just a ploy for the cops to start measuring the chest of every female riding a bike? /Mike Werner

sinchew news | washington times

you might not realize how much they rely on motorcycles..
